"The Other Side of a Sailor" is a collection of sea stories spun by old sea salts. Their yarns and tales of travels to exotic lands and shipboard life are relived through a young sailor as they sail the seven seas far from home. Daljan joins the U. S. Navy as a young man to escape the orphanage where he lives and embarks on his first tour of duty. From the first day he joins he gets into trouble, ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time. His travels take him from recruit training to a fast moving destroyer. He travels on board the ship around the world, where he visits strange and wonderful ports of call. He learns the hard way how to follow rules and do as expected, but somehow manages to survive. During his travels, he is initiated when crossing the Equator, awarded for boarding the wrong airplane, decorated for helping deliver a baby in a foreign country, and almost killed fighting a bull in Spain. He learns to drive a jeep while almost killing his passengers, sinks a small boat with a fisherman still in the boat, and learns all about girls, something he never learned living in an all-boys home. The stories span from World War One to the end of the Korean War.
